  6. Working Artist Initiative

    April 7, 2020, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM @ Gateway Island

    What is Working Artist Initiative? WAI is about helping artists form strong creative habits that will last a lifetime by learning to make a simple commitment. Make the time ot make art, at least 5 hours a week or more. WAI is a cross-genre group of beginning to professional visual artists, musicians, writers, photographers, and filmmakers who commit to the completion of a project of their choice. We will meet 7 times (every other week) for 12 weeks. In each meeting, artists share their progress, renew their commitments, and respond to each other’s work. At the end of the program, artists will have completed a committed portion of an original book, film, album, or group of works. Even more important, they will have built collaborative support and developed strong habits of art creation that will serve as the foundation for countless future projects For adults. Please email at least one week prior to program and reserve your spot!

  16. Women's Suffrage Educational Forum Through Art, Music & Discussion, Part 3

    The women suffrage movement was the struggle for the right of women to vote and run for office and is part of the overall women’s rights movement. Tennessee became the last battleground state for ratification. In 1920, women’s right to vote was achieved through the national and local efforts of the National Woman Suffrage Association. We will have a forum with a panel of women in our community’s workforce having an open discussion and artist displaying art. Light refreshments will be served. For ages 14+.

  24. Willie McGowan Banquet

    April 11, 2020, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Bradley Academy Museum & Cultural Center

    The late Willie McGowan spearheaded a movement consisting of the E.A. Davis Elk Lodge #1138, Rebecca Carney Temple #A798, former students, teachers and community supporters to restore Bradley Academy. The school closed as an all-black school in 1955 in the wake of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. After being used for office space and storage, the building fell into disrepair and faced demolition. The late Willie McGowan is known as the “Father of the Bradley Academy Historical Association.” The annual banquet is a fundraiser for the museum which showcases local history and acknowledges the community’s involvement in preserving the rich history.     Middle Tennessee is home to several venomous animals. The focus of this program will be on the identification, potential hazards, safety, and how to live side by side with these very important animals. In this program we will cover the venomous animals and their means of defense and prey capture. We will also discuss their importance in biotechnology and biodiscovery. This program would be great for college students concentrating on life sciences or biotechnology, young adults, and children just interested in the animals that call Middle Tennessee home.     In this program, we will hike ¾ of a mile on the paved trail to our river access. We will stomp around in the water (usually less than knee deep in this section) and catch crawfish, snails, and whatever other macroinvertebrates we can find! We will also talk about biodiversity and water quality. Water shoes are highly recommended, as anyone getting in the water must keep their shoes on. For all ages.
