[ARCHIVED] Two veteran Murfreesboro Police Department officers retire

Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) Chief Michael Bowen announces the retirement of two veteran officers who dedicated more than 53 years of combined service to the department.

A retirement ceremony was held Friday, Nov. 9, at Murfreesboro Police Headquarters honoring Officer Deric Haynes and Officer James Smith.

Officer Haynes begin his employment with the department on September 2, 1987, as a patrolman.  He was chosen Officer of the Month in March 1991 and received the CrimeStoppers Public Service Award in June 1993.  Haynes worked with MPD 32 years.

“It was a pleasure working with everybody for the past 32 years,” Haynes said.  “I’ve enjoyed it and I hope everyone enjoyed having me.”

Officer Smith started working at the department on November 25, 1996, as a patrolman. He was also a Motorcycle Officer and Parks Officer. Smith served 21 years and eight months before retiring.

“It’s been a long ride and I’ve enjoyed it,” Smith said.  “It was fun, and I want to thank Chief (Bowen) personally, especially for the last two years here.”

Chief Bowen thanked the officers for their many years of service.

“It’s truly bitter-sweet for us; we hate losing these officers as part of our family,” Bowen said. “At the same time, we realize there are other things in life to pursue and we wish them the best.”
