The Murfreesboro City Council adopted the FY20 Budget and Appropriation Ordinance on the required "Second Reading," June 13, 2019, at Murfreesboro City Hall. The Murfreesboro City Council met in a regular meeting at 7:00 p.m., Thurs., June 13, 2019, at Murfreesboro City Hall, to review and consider the proposed FY20 Budget ordinance on ‘Second Reading’. The meeting was televised in Council Chambers, 111 West Vine Street, 37133.

The balanced budget includes a $0.34 cent per $100 of assessed valuation property tax increase, increasing the tax rate from 0.9494 to 1.2894.  The FY20 Budget  also increased the Sold Waste Fee by $2.50 per month, per container to $7.50 for residential customers and increases the fee to $30.00 per month for non-residential (commercial) customers.  The approved FY20 Budget does not rely on the fund balance or savings to balance the budget.

The FY20 budget includes the first property tax increase in twenty years after a two-decade period in which the City provided services and infrastructure based on sales growth and land sales.  The new property tax rate is still lower than the rate two decades ago in 1999.  During that period, the property tax rate was adjusted downward five times.
