The Murfreesboro City Council will conduct two Special Meetings, Thursday, March 8, 2018, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Council will gather in Joint Meeting with the Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation Commission and the Murfreesboro Board of Education. Council will discuss plans for development of Blackman Park with the Parks & Recreation Commission and the future location for school sites with the School Board.

On June 8, 2017, Murfreesboro City Council contracted with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. for continued professional serves for concept and design development, final design, permitting, construction drawings, bid documentation, and construction phases services of Blackman Park. On February 23, 2017, a joint meeting was held with Parks & Recreation Commission and City Council in which concepts were considered, and the final Master Plan was adopted by City Council on April 13, 2017.
On Jan. 24, 2017, the Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation Department and Kimley-Horn Associates, Inc. held a public meeting at Blackman High School to gather input on features citizens would like to see in the new park. Kimley-Horn’s team of engineering, architectural and design companies coordinated a community visioning effort, focus groups, land-owner meetings, and a community meeting. The team conducted surveys, base mapping and concept development.
In June 2016, City Council purchased a 123-acre parcel of land bordered by Blackman Road, Burnt Knob Road, Veterans Parkway, and I-840 in the Blackman area known as the McDonald farm property for development of a park.
Murfreesboro City Schools is scheduled to build a new school for the opening of the 2019-2020 school year on the west side of I-24. Currently, three city elementary schools serve the area, including Cason Lane Academy, Scales Elementary and Overall Creek Elementary. The schools were built to serve 1,000 students and currently have 1029, 867 and 1023 students respectively.
