Interested in a position with one of the most progressive fire departments in Middle Tennessee? Look no further.

Hiring Process
Murfreesboro Fire Rescue accepts applications for firefighter at least once per year. Lateral hire applications are as needed and are also accepted during the application period for trainees. An eligibility list will be created for trainee and firefighter. Eligibility lists are good for at least 1 year unless renewal is required.

Trainee
All trainee applicants can expect to perform a physical assessment test (PAT) prior to receiving an invite to challenge the written test. A cutoff score is determined by the number of applicants. Those who are successful will be invited to interview in front of a panel that is made up of members of the department. This panel establishes the ranking of applicants. Trainees enter the department at a firefighter paygrade 1 and are required to attend and graduate a training academy and acquire subsequent certifications, including EMR.

Lateral Hire
Lateral hires or certified firefighters can expect to perform a PAT. Lateral hire applicants do not challenge a written test. The assistant chief of training will assess the application for fire service and medical service certifications before acceptance. Out of state applicants will need to present fire service certificates that have an IFSAC or Proboard seal. Out of state applicants will also need to be eligible for reciprocity of their EMS certification through Tennessee Department of Health Division of Emergency Medical Services. Lateral hires are eligible to enter the department above entry level upon presentation of advanced certifications. Firefighter II, AEMT, and Paramedic certifications will be placed higher in the step pay plan.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements for firefighter are encouraged to apply anyway. If you fall short of the medical certification requirements, you will not have to repeat fire training. An in-house EMR and AEMT program will get you up to speed.
