Floodplain Regulations

Build Responsibly to Minimize Flood Risk

Participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is based on an agreement between local communities and the Federal Government.  The community’s floodplain management regulations must meet or exceed the minimum requirements of the NFIP and other State requirements.

General Regulatory Highlights:

  • Development should be reasonably safe from flooding
  • Constructed with flood-resistant materials
  • Methods and practices to minimize flood damage
  • Locate and design mechanicals to minimize or eliminate flood damage
  • Locate and design public utilities and facilities to minimize or eliminate flood damage

A permit is required for ALL development in the SFHA.  Development is defined as any manmade change to improved or unimproved real estate, including, but not limited to buildings or other structures, mining, dredging, filling, grading, paving, excavation or drilling operations, or storage of equipment or materials.
