Journey to The Tap: How Water Gets to Your Home

When we wake up each morning and turn on our faucets to brush our teeth or take a shower, rarely do we consider the process in which the water coming from the faucet gets there. As we’ve always stated here at Murfreesboro Water Resources Department, water is essential to life and although our world’s supply of water is abundant it takes a very rigorous procedure to provide potable, clean water to our homes and businesses.

The biggest misconception about the process of residential and commercial water supply is that water is taken directly from the oceans, distributed throughout our country, and conserved in local water tanks before it gets to our faucets. Some of this is true, however there’s so much more to the process. For instance, depending on where we live, our drinking water could come from either surface water or groundwater, with either going through its own process to get to our sinks.

Tap Water 2The water for the Murfreesboro Water Resources comes from the East Fork Stones River.  We have two water intakes.  An intake is a pump station that pulls water from the source and pumps it to the treatment plant for processing.  One of our intakes is upstream of the Walter Hill dam and the other is prior to the entrance to the Percy Priest Lake.  Water is pump to the Stones River Water Treatment Plant where it goes through the treatment process.  This process includes softening, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, membrane filtration, adsorption, corrosion control, disinfection and fluoridation.  It is then pump to one of five storage tanks and to homes, businesses and industry.
