Spring 2016

Luau on the Island
Friday, April 1 • 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Gateway Island
Learn a little bit about Hawaiian culture: dance the hula, play the ukulele, make a lei, speak Hawaiian, and play games like they do on the Big Island. Ages 8 - 12. Reservations required: call 615-893-2141.

Park Day
Saturday, April 16
Location: Old Fort Park Pavilion #2
Invasive plant removal: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Family activities: 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
We are joining the Stones River National Battlefield in celebrating the National Parks' Centennial. Free for all ages.

Duck Day
Sunday, April 17 • 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Gateway Island
Come get a closer look at our native waterfowl, the duck.  Play bird-themed games, learn how to use binoculars to identify ducks and geese, take a closer look at what makes a bird so unique, and maybe even get a chance to feed a duck! Free for all ages.

Bike Basics with MOAB
Saturday, May 7 • 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Old Fort Park, Pavilion #1
Join the experts from MOAB to learn about safe bicycle operation, bike etiquette, and how to ride the Greenway and Murfreesboro streets safely. Bring your bike and helmet. Free for all ages.

Friday, May 13 
Gateway Island and Trail
Kids ages 5-14 can compete in either the 2.5k (1.55 miles) or 5k (3.1 miles) at the beautiful Gateway Island Trail. Fee includes a snack, souvenir 5-shirt and a finisher's medal. Awards will be given to the top finishers in several age groups. This is a professionally-timed event. Parents may run with their child for an additional $5; however, a shirt and medal are not included. Parents are strongly advised to run with their child aged 8 and under in the 5k.

Migratory Bird Day

International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) is an international education program that highlights and celebrates the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds between nesting habitats in North America and non-breeding grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Summer 2016

Stones Throw Away
Saturday, June 4 • 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Meet at the Old Fort Park Trailhead, Pavilion #3 for supplies and instructions.
We need your help cleaning up the Greenway! Volunteers will pick up trash beside the trail along the banks of the Stones River and Lytle Creek, or in the water. Trash bags, gloves, water and snacks will be provided. Free for all ages. Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
Groups over 10: please contact the Greenway Office at (615) 893-2141 for special arrangements.

Small Fry Tri
Saturday June 11 • 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Old Fort Park next to Kids' Castle
Murfreesboro’s smallest triathlon! Kids will run, bike and “swim” (run through sprinklers) to the finish line, where every participant receives a trophy. Parents, older siblings or "personal trainers" may help. Bring a bicycle or tricycle and a helmet. Pre-register and get your race packet early at Sports*Com, Patterson Community Center or The Wilderness Station between Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 9. Day of event registration: 9:30 a.m.
Fee: $6 per child (includes trophy)
Ages 2 - 6 years
T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event: $10

Boat Day
Saturday, June 25 • 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Manson Trailhead (off Searcy Street/Medical Center Parkway)
Try out different types of canoes and kayaks with the help from volunteers from Stones River Watershed Association. You’ll learn boating basics, paddling strokes and boat safety from knowledgeable volunteers. Discover characteristics and advantages of each craft. Paddles and personal flotation devices will be provided. Free for all ages

Island Fun Run
Friday, July 15
Gateway Island and Trail
Celebrate National Parks & Recreation month with a fun run around Gateway Island. 

Murph's Fun Run
Saturday, August 20 • 9:00 a.m.
Gateway Island and Trail
Run, walk or hop 1 mile around the Gateway Island. Every finisher will receive a Murph's Fun Run medal. 
Registration fee: one new school supply. T-shirts will be available for purchase.
For kids of all ages! (Parents may help)

Fall 2016

Greenway Art Festival
Saturday, September 17 • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Old Fort Park
Talented artists will display and sell their work along the Greenway trail at Old Fort Park. Browse through booths of original artwork in a family-friendly park setting. Oils, acrylics, watercolors, pottery, sculpture, and other original artwork will be available as well as music, food vendors and kids’ art activities.
