The City of Murfreesboro faces many challenges in providing adequate transportation infra-structure to accommodate the sustained population growth that our city and surrounding area has experienced over the last several decades and planning for improvements that will maintain an acceptable quality of life with the anticipated continuation of this growth.

Providing transportation improvements has been identified as a very high priority and as such has received substantial financial commitment from the Murfreesboro City Council. To assist in defraying very costly roadway building projects, the city continues to pursue partnerships with Rutherford County, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) by leveraging local funds as matching dollars for non-local dollars.

Our philosophy in combating congestion is to couple roadway expansion and new construction projects with efforts directed at improving the efficiency and safety of the roadways that already exist. That expansion and construction effort is evidenced through the 30-plus projects in various stages of completion ranging from advanced planning to actual construction. The latter effort is supported by several projects such as traffic signal inter-connection, installation of closed circuit television cameras on heavily traveled arterials and implementation of a central Traffic Operations Center (TOC).
