Solid Waste Department

Garbage Collection

The City of Murfreesboro provides a 96-gallon cart to each single family household free of charge. It is picked up once per week. Murfreesboro residents pay for Solid Waste services through local taxes so there is no monthly bill for service.

The Solid Waste Department can be reached at 615-893-3681. It's address is 4765 Florence Rd. and the office hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The department director is Joey Smith and messages can be left after hours.

Existing homes should already have carts assigned to them but for new homes, please call Solid Waste and a cart will be delivered to that address.

Apartment complexes will usually notify residents of waste disposal options.

The solid waste department reminds you of the following tips to help us serve you better:

  • Place your garbage cart on the street before 7 a.m. of your collection day.
  • Please be a good neighbor and remove your cart as soon as possible that same day.
  • A copy of the city's revised solid waste ordinance is now available.

Holiday pickup routes

Recycling, Hazardous Waste Collections

Special semi-annual hazardous waste collections are planned by Recycle Rutherford. The next collection will be held Nov. 3 on the parking lot across from the Children's Castle off Old Fort Parkway from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Held in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, residents can bring for disposal items not normally collected during weekly garbage pickups including pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals and other toxins and electronics such as computer components and televisions. The collection does not accept used motor oil (which can be recycled at the West Main Convenience Center in Murfreesboro and at other locations) or tires (which can be recycled at Rutherford County Convenience Centers on Weakley Lane in Smyrna or Cranor Road east of Murfreesboro). Due to changes in manufacturing that eliminated hazardous material, alkaline batteries (the kind used in smoke detectors and portable devices) no longer need to be recycled and may be disposed of in household trash. Rechargeable batteries and car batteries will be accepted. Old, dry paint will be accepted. Latex paint can be dried either by exposing it to air or by stirring into it a compound available from paint stores or by stirring in kitty litter. When latex paint is dry, it is no longer a hazard and can be disposed of by throwing in the trash. All other paints should be disposed of at this collection. Here is an expanded list of materials. The collection is for residential participation only.

Recycle Rutherford is a volunteer organization dedicated to increasing recycling of solid waste in Rutherford County. To volunteer or request more information, please call 687-3497 or go to its web site for details.

Non-hazardous waste may also be recycled at the city's convenience center, adjacent to the Streets and Signs Department on West Main Street.

Joey Smith

Welcome!
from Joey Smith, Director

The Murfreesboro Solid Waste Department is responsible for your garbage and yard waste collection. Together, we work hard to help make your neighborhood look as pleasing as possible. We'll provide residents with a free 96-gallon garbage cart and we will empty it once per week along with a second if you purchase it from the city by calling 893-3681. Additionally, we collect your limbs and brush in a timely fashion. We're also able to divert a tremendous volume from going to the landfill by mulching your yard waste. This mulch is available to you free of charge at the city's mulch site on Florence Road.

On behalf of all of our employees, we want you to enjoy living in our city.
