Citizens Police Academy

Committed to expanding its relationship with citizens and continuing a tradition established in June of 2000, Murfreesboro Police Department holds annual sessions of its Citizens Police Academy.

The most recent class of approximately 30 students will graduate April 10.

Classes are held over 12 consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m. in the Police Annex Training Room, 324 South Church St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

Students must be accepted for each 12-week session. Applications may be picked up at the department receptionist's desk facing South Church Street or the application can be downloaded and sent or delivered to the address above, or, a copy can be obtained at the receptionist's desk in city hall. The program's $50 cost offsets a portion of the training manuals and supplies. Applicants for whom this fee creates a hardship may request in writing that the fee be waived.

The program seeks to educate, exchange ideas and familiarize citizens with primary law enforcement operations and training. It will cover various topics such as: Uniformed Division policies and procedures, traffic enforcement and investigation, patrol procedures, criminal investigations, search and seizure laws and procedures, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), information systems, the K-9 Corps, officer survival, a ride-a-long with an officer evening, Community-Oriented Policing Services or COPS, tours of the department facilities, public relations, an overview of the special operations unit, defensive, vice and narcotic procedures, domestic violence and special presentations by the public defender's office, district attorney and Judicial Courts system. While the academy is not intended to certify a civilian as a police officer, it will better inform citizens about their Police Department. Our goal is to create a better quality of life for citizens, visitors and guests.
