City Employee Benefits

The City of Murfreesboro offers competitive salaries and an excellent benefit program.

Health Insurance

Medical care and hospitalization benefits are available through Blue Cross/Blue Shield or United Healthcare. Employees are free to choose from either of these providers based on which contract best serves their personal needs.

The City funds 80 percent of the premium amount and the employee's share can be paid for on a pre-tax, tax-free basis.

Dental coverage is also provided to cover expenses for the prevention of dental diseases and problems, designated restoration and repair procedures, and orthodontics.

Employees should refer to their benefit booklet for additional information.

Disability Benefits

The City provides a monthly disability benefit designed to coordinate with Social Security disability payments to provide a total disability income to 60% of the employee's predisability budgeted salary.

Retirement

The City's Pension Plan calls for normal retirement at age 55 for police officers and firefighters and 65 for all other employees. Employees with 30 years of service who are 55 years old are also eligible for normal retirement. Early retirement benefits are available at age 55 and 25 years of service or age 62 with 20 years of service. Retirement benefits are calculated at 2% for every year of service to a maximum of 30 years of employment and based on an employee's highest five-year average monthly budgeted earnings.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is based on the number of full years of service as of the anniversary of hire:

  • After 1 year - 10 working days
  • After 5 years - 12 working days
  • After 10 years - 14 working days
  • After 15 years - 15 working days

Sick Leave

All regular full-time employees, with the exception of firefighters, earn one day of sick leave each month. Firefighters can earn 12 hours of sick leave each month.

Flexible Benefits

Among the City's flexible benefits program includes premium conversion, dependent care reimbursement, non-covered medical reimbursement and deferred compensation. The Personnel Department can provide additional information on these benefits.
