Ghost World
By James McClure; Directed by George W. Manus, Jr.
On a park bench in Central Park, you can meet anyone. Here two strangers meet and strike up a familiar conversation, familiar, at least to Penderton (Jeff Harr). Finally he recognizes his new bench mate, Jackie Jack, the Sturgeon King (Tony Lehew)—a character in an unfinished play Penderton had penned years ago. Jackie Jack pleads his case for a second act, a completed life, as he offers examples of too many other characters in unfinished or discarded plays, who are wandering around waiting for their second acts. Penderton at first declines to agree to write a second act to give Jackie Jack a complete life, but comes around to the idea just as it's getting dark. As Jackie Jack escorts Penderton out of the park, Penderton is really being taken further into his own broken mind. (Photo: L to R - Jeff Harr and Tony Lehew)
Zoo Story
By Edward Albee; Directed by Raemona Little Taylor
The Zoo Story is playwright Edward Albee’s first published play. This one act play involves two characters, Peter (George W. Manus, Jr.) and Jerry (Isaac Taylor). Combining both realistic and absurd elements, Albee has constructed a short but multi-leveled play dealing with issues of human isolation, loneliness, class differences, and the dangers of inaction within American society. The play focuses on the need for people to acknowledge and understand each other's differences. (Photo: L to R - George W. Manus, Jr. and Isaac Taylor)
Conversation at Night With A Despised Character
By Friedrich Durrenmatt; Directed by George W. Manus, Jr.
A window pane breaks sharply on the darkened stage, and a man (Jerry Bailey) who has been sitting quietly at midnight says to an invisible intruder in a calm, firm voice, "Please come in." For this man has long awaited the visitor, knowing he would come sooner or later but not knowing in what disguise he would appear. The intruder (Robert McAdams) presents himself as the secret executioner for the ruler of their totalitarian state. But it is Death itself that speaks. The macabre theme has overtones of such perceptiveness and even humor that it can stand as one of Durrenmatt's most interesting achievements. (Photo: Jerry Bailey, front, and Robert McAdams, back)
