Judicial Department

Overview

The primary functions of the Judicial Department are to keep records of all violations of city ordinances and to collect all fines and costs. The personnel consist of the City Judge, the Chief Court Clerk and three Court Clerks.

The City Judge serves as department head, presiding over all hearings, which begin at three different hours each Tuesday and Thursday. It is the Judge's duty to determine if a City ordinance has been violated after hearing the testimony of necessary parties and also to determine the fine. The Judge also serves as chief of the records of the office.

The Chief Court Clerk is responsible for day-to-day supervision of the operation and administrative duties of the court, as directed by the Judge, the daily collection and depositing of all funds with the City Treasurer, and all required reports to various offices of the State of Tennessee.

Murfreesboro City Court is located on the second floor of City Hall. Normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Court is held by Judge Sellers every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:15 a.m., 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. If your citation was issued by a Tennessee State trooper or County Deputy Sheriff, you should refer all questions and payment to the General Sessions Court, Rutherford County Judicial Building on the square.
