The in-house training is provided by Instructors who are assigned to each shift. These instructors teach basic to advanced firefighting skills, including job safety and driving, pumping, and aerial operations.
Firefighters train a minimum of 20 hours per month in order to help maintain the city's Class 3 Insurance Services Office (ISO) fire rating. Training is received from MFD Instructors, Tennessee State Fire School, University of Tennessee Center for Government Training, MTSU, Volunteer State Community College, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), and the National Fire Academy (NFA).
