Food Service

As the School Food Service personnel look to the coming school year, their greatest challenge is preparing nutritious breakfasts and lunches and helping boys and girls form good eating habits that may continue into adult life. It is hoped that their lunchroom experiences will contribute to the development of healthy bodies and minds, better equipping students for coping in our complex society. The school lunch is planned to meet guidelines of the Tennessee Department of Education, Child Nutrition Program, and the United States Department of Agriculture. Changes are made in the program from time to time. The school adjusts its lunches and policies to reflect these changes. For example, lunches contain less sugar, salt and fat and more fresh fruits and vegetables. A variety of milk, including 2% and skim, is made available daily.

Eating a meal in the cafeteria will hopefully teach children to recognize and enjoy a well-balanced meal and provide an opportunity for eating a variety of wholesome foods. Eating in the cafeteria may provide cultural and social experiences for children and provide an appropriate setting for encouraging good table manners. Teachers may utilize cafeteria experiences to add enrichment in the various areas of instruction; particularly in health, science, art, social studies, and math.

It is a school system that is known for innovation that brings results for children. These results are evidenced in the system's excellent test scores. Students at every grade level and in every subject score above national and state averages on comprehensive assessment tests administered annually.

We attribute much of the success of our students to the great teachers for which our school system is known. Our teachers have high expectations for students, are innovative and caring, and establish close relationships with parents and other members of the community.
