Services

Building Inspections

Inspections of one- and two-family dwelling projects are conducted by combination inspectors who are responsible for inspecting the building, plumbing, gas, and mechanical systems, and by the state electrical inspectors who are responsible for inspecting the electrical systems. The state electrical inspectors work out of the building and codes department.

Murfreesboro building permit and inspection services are now available online through http://www.buildingdepartment.com by BUILDERadius, Inc.

Plan Review

The plans examiners are responsible for reviewing building plans for the construction or renovation of multi-family, commercial or industrial projects and coordination of plan review with other associated departments. The City of Murfreesboro is an exempt city under TCA 68-120-101.

Sign Ordinance

The sign inspectors are responsible for reviewing sign plans and making sign inspections prior to and after sign placements, preparing and presenting sign cases before the Murfreesboro Board of Zoning Appeals.

Substandard Conditions

The codes inspectors are responsible for the enforcement of adopted minimum property maintenance standards, which apply to existing structures and premises.

The Murfreesboro Building and Codes Department was created in 1985 to provide for the protection and welfare of the citizens of Murfreesboro where building safety is concerned.

The department is charged with the responsibility of enforcing nationally recognized construction standards for all new construction, renovations and additions, and with enforcing minimum property maintenance standards. Inspection personnel are trained and certified by the State of Tennessee and strive to provide efficient and responsive service to the citizens of Murfreesboro.

A comprehensive building report for 2006 from the planning and engineering department is also available.
