Building Permits
Residential building permit fees for new construction of one and two family dwellings are based on square feet of heated areas plus one-third of the square feet of unheated areas and areas under roof, such as garages, unfinished basements and carports. Heated areas are measured along the outside of exterior walls. Residential building permit fees for additions/alterations are based on valuation.

*Construction value is defined as including structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, interior finish, site preparation and development, architectural and design fees, overhead and profit.
Electrical Permit Inspection Fees
The State of Tennessee's Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Fire Prevention, Electrical Section performs electrical inspections in the city. An inspector can be reached by calling 904-6536or 867-6505. Electrical permits are issued by the City of Murfreesboro for the State of TN and fees are calculated based on service size and the number of inspections.

Mechanical Permit Fees
Mechanical permit fees for residential units are $38.00. Commercial units are a $30 flat fee plus $20 for the first $1,000 of valuation and $6.00 for each additional $1,000 of evaluation.
Gas Permit Fees
Gas permit fees are a $20 flat fee plus $5.00 per fixture.
Fireworks Permits
Prior to issuance of a fireworks permit, an applicant must have obtained a state fireworks permit, approval of the proposed location by the Board of Zoning Appeals and a valid City of Murfreesboro business license. A tent permit, in the amount of $75.00, is also required, plus fees for on-site signage.
Sign Permit Fees
- $20 plus $1 per square foot of surface area display
- $30 for portable signs
- $20 plus 50 cents per linear foot for strip lighting
- $30 for relocation or moving of any sign or sign structure
- $30 for demolition of any sign or structure.

The Murfreesboro Building and Codes Department was created in 1985 to provide for the protection and welfare of the citizens of Murfreesboro where building safety is concerned.
The department is charged with the responsibility of enforcing nationally recognized construction standards for all new construction, renovations and additions, and with enforcing minimum property maintenance standards. Inspection personnel are trained and certified by the State of Tennessee and strive to provide efficient and responsive service to the citizens of Murfreesboro.
