Description of work by Lee Ann Walker

Materials used: Hand dyed and commercial fabrics; cotton and cotton blend fabric; beads; cotton and synthetic batting; fabric pens and dyes. Wood and metal hanging rods.

Techniques used: Traditional pieced and quilted, appliquéd; hand and machine sewn and quilted; glass beads glued in place; my designs printed on fabric; designs and lettering drawn directly on fabric.

Artist’s statement : My designs are primarily stitched on my sewing machine. I enjoy embellishing my work with hand stitching however this is becoming increasingly difficult due to arihritis in my hands. I enjoy appliquéing bright colors and fanciful designs more than the traditional pieced quilting techniques. I use my designs in wall hangings or as pillows, which I consider small art works.

Cat Aliens: These are usually smaller hangings, sewn with tongue in cheek. This is my way of illustrating some of those many things that scientists and archeologists find hard to explain. Who and how did they build the pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, what killed the dinosaurs, etc. Late night radio talk shows and supermarket tabloids seem to have all the answers, like the time I read that cats are really aliens, sending their observations of us humans back to their home planet. If you’ve ever had a cat, you get that. For more information see the attached statement.
